Crime

I wasn’t so sure about City of God before watching it…sure I heard good things (it’s ranked in the IMDB top 25), but it always seemed like something I wasn’t really interested in. My expectations were surpassed by a mile.

When watching this movie, I was instantly reminded of the crime classic Goodfellas because there isn’t really a central plot to the movie and it basically just follows someone who grows up around gangsters throughout his life.City of God follows a kid named “Rocket” as he tries to stay honest and get a job as a photographer even though it is nearly impossible for him to do so. The City of God itself is a slum in the middle of Rio de Janeiro where the police are just as corrupt as the gangsters, little kids running around with handguns are common, and if you just look at a gang member the wrong way you’ll be shot.

The other main character that the movie follows is Li’l Ze, who is a powerful gang leader throughout most of the film. He is the polar opposite of Rocket; Li’l Ze is one of the most ruthless villains in movie history and he’s pretty easy to hate.

Visually, the movie looks great. The movie’s orange-ish color looks great and really adds to the film. In hectic scenes, the camera will shake all over the place and really give you the feeling that this is a documentary being shot for the news (City of God is actually based on a true story).

In this review I really haven’t even started to explain the gang wars and bloodshed that goes on in the movie; writing really doesn’t do City of God justice. It’s easily in my 10 favorite movies of all time.

Score = 10/10
