The Best Movie of 2009

For this list, I’m going to do something a little different. First, I’m going to list all of the movies I saw from 2009. Then, I’m going to slowly narrow down the list until I get to what I thought was the best movie of 2009. So, I saw:

  • (500) Days of Summer
    ASeriousMan

    I hate you.

  • A Serious Man
  • Adventureland
  • Avatar
  • Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans
  • District 9
  • Dragonball Evolution
  • Extract
  • Fantastic Mr. Fox
  • The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard
  • The Hangover
  • The Hurt Locker
  • I Love You, Man
  • The Informant!
  • Inglourious Basterds
  • Invictus
  • Moon
  • Paranormal Activity
  • Paul Blart: Mall Cop
  • Sherlock Holmes
  • Star Trek
  • Taken
  • Up
  • Up in the Air
  • Watchmen
  • Zombieland

watchmenThe first movie I’m going to eliminate from contention is the most boring movie I’ve ever seen. So, say goodbye to A Serious Man.

Paul Blart: Mall Cop isn’t the worst movie I’ve ever seen, but it’s not particularly good either. It won’t win.
Dragonball Evolution wasn’t nearly as bad as I expected, but there’s no way I’d ever be taken seriously if I called that my movie of the year. It’s not very good. Goodbye, Dragonball.
The Goods had some moments, but for the most part it was pretty dumb. It’s eliminated.
Adventureland is okay, but it’s not my thing. I was bored throughout most of it. It’s gone.
Watchmen is probably the biggest disappointment of the year. The acting was really hit or miss, the music felt out of place, and the slow-mo really annoyed me. No chance does that win.
So, now the updated list looks like this:

  • (500) Days of Summer
  • Avatar
  • Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans
  • District 9
  • Extract
  • Fantastic Mr. Fox
  • The Hangover
  • The Hurt Locker
  • I Love You, Man
  • The Informant!
  • Inglourious Basterds
  • Invictus
  • Moon
  • Paranormal Activity
  • Sherlock Holmes
  • Star Trek
  • Taken
  • Up
  • Up in the Air
  • Zombieland

A lot of these movies weren’t terrible, but they don’t really do anything to stand out either — by this time next year, I’ll probably have forgotten all about them. So, say goodbye to Invictus, Sherlock Holmes, The Informant!, Taken, and Extract.
I also want to say goodbye to (500) Days of Summer. It wasn’t bad, but I thought it was too in love with itself. “Look at how quirky our movie is!”
Updated list:

  • Avatar
  • Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans
  • District 9
  • Fantastic Mr. Fox
  • The Hangover
  • The Hurt Locker
  • I Love You, Man
  • Inglourious Basterds
  • Moon
  • Paranormal Activity
  • Star Trek
  • Up
  • Up in the Air
  • Zombieland

AvatarBad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans definitely isn’t a movie I’ll be forgetting anytime soon. I’m not sure how you can forget a movie with scenes like this. It’s a good movie, but for some reason it never really drew me in. It’s eliminated.
I Love You, Man is a very good comedy…but there’s no way I’m putting it above the other remaining comedies on the list.
See ya, Avatar. It’s a good movie and looks amazing, but the story and characters leave something to be desired.

This is where it gets really hard. I have no idea where to go from here. Updated list:

  • District 9
  • Fantastic Mr. Fox
  • The Hangover
  • The Hurt Locker
  • Inglourious Basterds
  • Moon
  • Paranormal Activity
  • Star Trek
  • Up
  • Up in the Air
  • Zombieland

Time to eliminate one of the animated movies. Both are very good and can be enjoyed by adults or kids — but, I think Fantastic Mr Fox catered to the adults more. It moves on, and Up is eliminated.
Now I’m going to compare the action sci-fi movies, District 9 & Star Trek. Star Trek has much better characters, but District 9 had a better story. The villain in Star Trek was weak, in my opinion…so Star Trek is gone.
I love The Hangover, it’s one of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen. But, the plot and the characters just aren’t that well developed. If this was a competition for funniest movie ever, it would have a chance…but besides the hilarious jokes it doesn’t have much going for it. The Hangover is eliminated.
Updated list:

  • District 9
  • Fantastic Mr. Fox
  • The Hurt Locker
  • Inglourious Basterds
  • Moon
  • Paranormal Activity
  • Up in the Air
  • Zombieland
Fantastic Mr Fox

Even though I liked Fantastic Mr Fox a lot more than I expected, it's not even close to being my favorite movie of the year.

Even though Fantastic Mr Fox was great, it was still an animated film…I prefer live action. I think an animated film could be my movie of the year one year, but in order to do that it would REALLY have to blow me away. Fantastic Mr Fox didn’t really blow me away, so it’s eliminated.
Up in the Air is very, very good…but just like Fantastic Mr Fox, it’s not from my favorite genre. Up in the Air is gone.
Now I’m going to put action sci-fi (District 9) up against psychological sci-fi (Moon)…and honestly it’s not even close. District 9 is eliminated.

The final five:

  • The Hurt Locker
  • Inglourious Basterds
    Shoshanna - Inglourious Basterds

This scene marks the beginning of Chapter 5 in Inglourious Basterds, which is probably my favorite 40 minutes from any movie of 2009. If Chapter 4 of the movie was just as good, this would easily be my favorite movie of the year.

  • Moon
  • Paranormal Activity
  • Zombieland

Honestly, the top three movies remaining are just in an entirely different league than Paranormal Activity and Zombieland. Paranormal Activity scared the crap out of me and Zombieland was really entertaining, but neither is the movie of the year. They’re gone.
Inglourious Basterds would probably be the winner if the bar scene didn’t take so long. It drags on for too long. So it’s eliminated.

Moon vs. The Hurt Locker

If I were to review these, they’d both get 10/10. They’re both among the top 10 movies of the decade, easily. But since only one of them can win…

My Favorite Movie of 2009:

The Hurt Locker

  • (500) Days of Summer
  • A Serious Man
  • Adventureland
  • Avatar
  • Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans
  • District 9
  • Dragonball Evolution
  • Extract
  • Fantastic Mr. Fox
  • The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard
  • The Hangover
  • The Hurt Locker
  • I Love You, Man
  • The Informant!
  • Inglourious Basterds
  • Invictus
  • Moon
  • Paranormal Activity
  • Paul Blart: Mall Cop
  • Sherlock Holmes
  • Star Trek
  • Taken
  • Up
  • Up in the Air
  • Watchmen
  • Zombieland
